The double-hung windows of New York City apartments create a double-framing of the view that is divided into an upper and lower part of equal size. Overlooking the Lower East Side from the top floor of a tenement building, the visual continuity of the wide exterior space is separated into a universal and local part: The upper part of the window shows only the sky, the view is place-less. The lower part of the window shows the immediate environs; it situates the viewer geographically in the city. This coexistence within the overall aperture of the wall makes the window capture time.

Manual middle format photographs of window frame and exterior view montaged digitally. Digital prints mounted on plexiglass
