This apartment located in the historic London Terrace Towers in the Chelsea gallery area was remodeled to become the New York base of the international artist couple Matt Saunders and Katarina Burin. To enlarge the spatial experience of the small studio facing the courtyard, all unnecessary partition walls were removed. Millwork along the perimeter of the apartment was designed to economize space while providing a sophisticated environment, suitable for entertaining guest.
Inspired by the owner’s drawing collection of the German architect Hans Poelzig's interiors from the 1920’s, built-in banquettes provide seating and storage. As common in ship design, the kitchen counter extends to a captain’s table for dining. A porthole window provides natural light for the bathroom. Walls are framed with flexible lighting systems for art display. Colored surfaces create distinct areas of program in the open space.
