The 2024/25 first year design studio at HSRM focused on the idea of architectural space as an imagined interior within artefacts created by nature. The students had to pick an expressive form from a given selection of objects, ranging from sea sponges and oyster shells over sand roses and driftwood to stones and minerals of all kinds. Each student could choose one for their project, the one they felt most attracted too, the one which “spoke” to them.

The task was to develop the inside of the artefact in architectural scale, inspired by its shape, surface character and physical consistency. An experiential passage had to be designed through the space, including entry and exit, platforms, stairs and ramps. The exploration of different model making materials such as wood, metal, plaster, styrofoam and plexiglas etc. was an important part of the design process: To interpret the character of the natural artefact with artistic means and to translate it into elements of a buildable structure.
