An essay on the oeuvre of the American architect Andrew Berman. The text is centered around to Berman’s sensible use of construction materials: Instead of emphasizing material differences by exaggerating visual contrast, Berman creates a play of subtle ambiguities. He composes joints and textures in a dialectic way that manipulates or sometimes even disguises their material identity. In doing so, he creates an architecture of “intentional indeterminance”.
